Rule set: Written to NHL rules. Where IIHF, USA Hockey or typical rec-league rules differ in a way that changes how you play — and equipment is one of the areas where they differ most — it is flagged inline. Equipment rules vary far more between leagues than playing rules do, so the recurring instruction in this document is: check your own league's requirements before you buy.

Overview

Hockey gear does two separate jobs — it keeps you out of hospital, and it determines what your body is able to do on the ice. Most players get the first job roughly right and the second one badly wrong, usually by buying skates that are too big and a stick that is too stiff.

This document covers the whole kit: what each piece is, how it should fit, what the rules actually require, and where the money is worth spending. The single most important sentence in it is this: fit beats price at every position on the list. As Pure Hockey's own fitting guide puts it, "a low-end skate that provides good heel lock will outperform a high-end skate that is a size too large."

A note on prices. Every figure here comes from a North American retailer's own published guidance, retrieved 27 July 2026 — but they are not all current shelf prices. The helmet tiers in particular come from a retailer article referencing older product generations, so read those as relative, not as quotes. Prices vary enormously by region, by currency, by season and by how patient you are about buying last year's model. Treat them all as shape.

Optional but common: cut-resistant socks, sleeves or base layers (IIHF Rule 9.5: "All Players are strongly recommended to wear cut-resistant socks, sleeves, or undergarments." USA Hockey Rule 304(g) is a notch softer — players "are recommended to wear cut-resistant socks, sleeves or undergarments." Recommended by both; only the IIHF says strongly), skate guards or soakers, a shooting pad for home practice, and spare laces.

What USA Hockey says you are personally responsible for

USA Hockey Rule 304(a) puts the obligation on you rather than on the referee: "Each player is personally responsible to wear protective equipment for all games. Such equipment should include gloves, shin pads, shoulder pads, elbow pads, hip pads or padded hockey pants, protective cup, tendon pads plus all head protective equipment as required by USA Hockey rules."


What the Rules Actually Require

This is the section people skip and then get sent off the ice for. The three main rule sets differ substantially.

Helmets

  • NHL (Rule 9.6): every player must wear a League-approved helmet on the ice, on the bench and in the penalty box. If your helmet comes off during play you must either leave the ice or retrieve and replace it "within a reasonable period of time" — a minor penalty if you do neither. You may not leave the penalty bench during play without a helmet with the chin strap fastened.
  • IIHF (Rule 9.6): stricter. A player whose helmet comes off during play "must exit the playing surface immediately" and is not allowed to pick it up and put it back on. Minor penalty, no warning.
  • USA Hockey (Rule 304(c), (e)): a HECC-certified helmet is required in every age classification except Adults; adults must wear a hockey helmet (which may be non-HECC-certified) with the chin strap fastened. And in all classifications including adults, if a skater's helmet or facemask comes off, play is stopped immediately and the skater is ruled off the ice until after the next faceoff. That is a real tactical difference from the NHL: in beer league, losing your lid kills the play.

Facial protection

  • NHL (Rule 9.7): since 2013-14, players with fewer than 25 games of NHL experience must wear a visor.
  • IIHF (Rule 9.7): three permissible types — visor, cage, or full-face visor. Every player born after 31 December 1974 must wear at minimum a visor, fixed along the sides so it cannot be flipped up, covering "the eyes and nose in its entirety." Tinted or coloured visors are banned. Women's hockey at both Senior and U18 level (Rule 102.1–102.2) and men's junior U18 (Rule 202.2) require full-face protection.
  • USA Hockey (Rule 304(d)): a HECC-certified facemask is required in every classification below Adults, plus whatever chin protection comes with it. Removing the chin cup makes the whole assembly illegal.

Neck protection

  • IIHF (Rule 9.12): mandatory for all players in all categories of IIHF competition, "choosing a design that covers as much of the neck as possible." Minor penalty after a warning.
  • USA Hockey (Rule 304(g)): HECC-certified neck laceration protector required in all age classifications except Adults; BNQ-certified protectors also count through the 2026-27 season. Strongly recommended for adults.
  • Hockey Canada (Rule 3.6(c)): a BNQ-certified throat protector is mandatory for all players registered in minor and female hockey — and goaltenders must wear one even if their mask has a throat dangler attached. The standard is CAN/BNQ 9415-370 (currently being withdrawn, with no successor named in the withdrawal notice; see Certification). Note that this is a requirement in its own right, not the USA Hockey alternative that expires after 2026-27.
  • NHL: the 2025-26 rulebook sets no neck-guard requirement anywhere in its equipment section.

Mouthguards

  • USA Hockey (Rule 304(f)): a coloured (non-clear) internal mouthpiece is required from 12 & under through Youth 18 & under and Girls' 19 & under.
  • IIHF (Rule 9.13): recommended for all, and required for men's junior U20 players who are not wearing full-face protection (Rule 202.3).

Everything else

  • Pads go under the jersey. NHL Rule 9.5 and 12.1: all protective equipment except gloves, headgear and goalkeepers' leg pads must be worn under the uniform. IIHF Rule 9.5 adds mouthguards and neck laceration protectors to the exceptions. USA Hockey Rule 304(a) also excepts padded hockey pants — which is why you see pants worn over the jersey hem in some North American leagues and never in the NHL.
  • Elbow pads (NHL Rule 12.3): any elbow pad without a soft outer covering of sponge rubber "at least one-half inch (½") thick" is dangerous equipment.
  • Gloves (NHL Rule 12.2): cutting out the palm is a minor penalty.
  • Shin pads (IIHF Rule 9.9): must be small enough to fit inside standard socks, with no protrusions or additions.
  • Skates (IIHF Rule 9.10): exactly four parts — boot, blade, holder, laces. No pick. No mechanical aids. Laces may be any non-fluorescent colour but "must not be so long that they touch the ice." USA Hockey Rule 302(a) simply bans speed skates, figure skates, and anything unsafe.
  • Sticks: NHL Rule 10.1 — maximum 63 inches from heel to end of shaft (65" by exception for players 6'6" or taller), blade maximum 12½ inches heel to toe, blade 2 to 3 inches deep, curve depth maximum ¾ inch. USA Hockey Rule 301(b) allows 65 inches as standard with the same blade limits. The two 65-inch figures are not the same rule and the sets do not converge: USA Hockey's 65" is a flat maximum available to every player with no height exception, while the NHL's 65" exists only as an exception that must be applied for in writing and approved by Hockey Operations before use, and "only players 6'6" tall or more will be considered." So a 64-inch stick is legal in USA Hockey play and illegal in the NHL for all but a handful of approved players. IIHF: 1.63 m shaft, 32.0 cm blade, exception for players 2.0 m or taller — and the IIHF curve limit is in the same rule, IIHF Rule 10.1: the perpendicular distance from a line drawn heel-to-toe "to the point of maximum curvature shall not exceed 1.9cm" (about ¾ inch, so effectively the same limit as the NHL's).

Skates — The Most Important Purchase By a Wide Margin

Nothing else in the bag is close. Your skates are the interface between you and the only surface you play on. Every technique in Skating — knee bend, edge angle, extension, recovery — is executed through the boot. A boot that lets your foot move independently of it cannot transmit any of that.

Fit above everything

Three checks, in order:

  1. Heel lock. Sit down, kick your heel firmly into the back of the boot, and lace up. Your heel must not lift or shift when you walk. Pure Hockey's fitting guide is blunt about it: "Moving or lifting your heel inside the hockey skate should be impossible." How To Hockey's fitting crash course says the same — "your heel should not move when walking."
  2. Toes just brushing the cap. With your heel seated back, your big toe should barely brush the toe cap — feathering it, not pressing into it, and not floating clear of it.
  3. No dead space anywhere else. Foot flat on the footbed, snug all round, no gaps at the ankle or under the arch.

Lace properly while you check. Tighten firmly through the first two or three eyelets so the forefoot is snug, then tighten well through the curve from foot to ankle — that is what pulls your heel back into the pocket. Wear the socks you actually play in.

Sizing: skates are not shoes

Hockey skates run roughly 1 to 1½ sizes smaller than your street shoe size. (The retailer fitting guide this comes from states the rule generally and names no brands, so treat it as a starting point rather than as verified for any particular manufacturer — brands and even model lines differ, which is why you try them on.) Do not be alarmed by the number on the box. Widths are commonly D (regular) and EE (wide), though Bauer and CCM have both moved to numbered fit systems (Fit 1 / Fit 2 / Fit 3, and tapered / regular / wide) that map onto the old letter widths.

For children, half a size larger than that is acceptable for growth, and no more. Pure Hockey's sizing guide is specific about what that looks like inside the boot: toes barely touching the toe cap with "no more than 1/4 inch of space in the heel," and "when sizing children, follow the same method while allowing 1/2 size extra for growing room."

Buying a size too big is the most common and most damaging mistake

It is a false economy in two directions.

It makes you a worse skater, immediately and permanently while you own them. Pure Hockey's skate sizing page is unusually direct: "Going too big will result in blisters and a noticeable decrease in skating ability due to a lack of ankle stability. A strong stride comes from having a boot working in unison with the foot of the player."

Here is the mechanism, and it is the reason this matters more than any other equipment point in this document. Edges are controlled by ankle angle. To get a blade onto a steep inside or outside edge you roll your ankle and drive the knee out over the skate. If there is slack between your foot and the boot, the first several degrees of that ankle movement are spent taking up slack instead of tilting the blade. You feel unstable, so you don't commit, so you never get onto a real outside edge. Players in oversized skates typically diagnose themselves as having "weak ankles." They usually have oversized skates.

If you are working through the edge drills in Skating and outside edges feel unsafe no matter how much you practise, get your skate fit checked before you buy another power-skating session.

It also destroys the skate. A foot sliding around inside the boot breaks down the sides of the quarter package from the inside. Pure Hockey: wearing skates any larger than the recommended fit "will cause blisters and will break down the sides of the boot."

Recreational versus performance boots

Skate lines run to a lot of price points per manufacturer. Counted from the manufacturers' own catalogues on 27 July 2026, current-generation senior skates only: Bauer lists nine models across two player lines — Vapor at four tiers (Fly30 $319.99, Fly40 $579.99, FlyPro $779.99, FlyLite $1,039.99) and Supreme at five (F20 $229.99, F30 $319.99, F40 $579.99, F50 Pro $779.99, Fuse $1,039.99). CCM lists ten — Jetspeed at six (FT860 $249.99 up to FT8 Pro $1,229.99) and Tacks at four (XR 70 $319.99 up to XR $919.99). Add the previous generation still on clearance and each brand runs to about fourteen. So: four to six tiers per line, nine or ten per manufacturer, and the numbers move every time a generation rolls over. What matters is the tiers, not how many of them there are. The differences that actually matter to you:

  • Entry-level. Soft quarter package (the boot's structural shell), minimal support, breaks down in a season or two. Fine for a few public skates a year; not fine for learning to play.
  • Upper entry / lower mid-range. Stiffer polyurethane shells, some ankle support, quick-release holders that let you swap steel.
  • Mid-range. The first tier with composite material in the quarter package, and — importantly — the first price point that can be heat-moulded (baked). This is the value sweet spot for most adult recreational and beer-league players: enough stiffness to develop technique, enough moulding to fit properly.
  • Upper-mid and above. Stiffer, lighter, better steel, better liners, more customisable fit. Second-tier boots are what most NHL players actually wear, being nearly identical to top-of-the-line but with a faster break-in.

Retail prices on skates at a US retailer run from about $50–$80 for the basic entry-level tier up to roughly $950 for top-of-the-line. (Both ends come from the same cited retailer comparison, which names "Entry-Level Skates ($49.99 – $79.99)" and a $949.99 flagship.)

Stiffness — what it is for

A stiffer boot transmits more of your leg's force into the ice and holds your ankle in a consistent position under load. That is an advantage if you are strong enough and skating hard enough to load it. If you are not, a very stiff boot simply refuses to let you bend your ankle, which flattens your knee bend and takes away exactly the edge angle you were trying to buy.

The practical rule: match boot stiffness to how often and how hard you skate, not to your ambitions. A pro-stiffness boot worn once a week by a beginner is worse than a mid-range boot worn by the same person.

Baking (heat moulding)

Mid-range and up boots contain thermoformable materials. A shop oven heats the boot — How To Hockey describes a professional oven bringing the skate to around 200°F — so the material softens and takes the shape of your foot as it cools. Done properly it roughly halves the break-in time.

How to do it right:

  • Have a shop do it. Home ovens are not the same thing and you can cook the glue.
  • Pull out on the laces, have the fitter lace them, and then sit still. Do not stand up, do not flex your ankle forward or back, do not press on the boot.
  • Wait about ten minutes for the skate to cool and set before moving.
  • Do not bake entry-level skates. There is little mouldable material in them and the heat can do more harm than good.

Break-in and lace bite

Expect mild discomfort for the first few sessions while the liner packs out. How To Hockey's threshold is a good one: if it still genuinely hurts by your fourth time on the ice, go back to the shop. That is a fit problem, not a break-in problem.

Lace bite — a hot spot, blister or cyst on the top of the foot — comes from lace pressure driving straight down onto the tendon. Two fixes:

  • Change your lacing. Lacing "in-to-out" — feeding the lace up through the eyelet from underneath, the standard way shoes are laced — gives a tighter fit but drives the pressure straight down onto the tongue. Lacing "out-to-in" is, in Discount Hockey's words, "when the lace is brought over the eyelet and then turned back in. This method will provide more comfort and reduce the risk of lace bite because the tension is applied laterally instead of downward." You trade a little tightness for it.
  • Gel pads inside the tongue disperse the pressure.

If you need Achilles or ankle gel pads to fill empty space, that is a signal your skates are too big.


Skate Sharpening

What "hollow" means

A hockey blade is not flat across its width. Sharpening cuts a concave groove down the centre of the blade, and what is left standing at either side of that groove are your two edges — the inside edge and the outside edge that Skating is built around.

The radius of hollow (ROH) is the radius of the circle that groove is cut to, quoted in inches: ⅜", 7/16", ½", 9/16", ⅝", and so on. Counter-intuitively, the smaller the number, the deeper the hollow and the sharper the bite. A ⅜" hollow is aggressive; a ⅝" hollow is shallow.

Deeper versus shallower — the trade-off

There is no correct answer, only a trade:

  • Deeper hollow (⅜", 7/16"). More bite. Better acceleration, harder stops, tighter turns. Less glide, and the skates can feel "grabby" — harder to transition between edges and harder to hold speed.
  • Shallower hollow (9/16", ⅝"). More glide and more top-end speed for the same effort. Less bite, so stops and hard turns need more attention.

The two variables that push you one way or the other:

  • Body weight. A heavier player sinks the blade into the ice more for the same hollow, so heavier players generally go shallower and lighter players deeper.
  • Ice temperature — and here two of the big retailers flatly contradict each other. Discount Hockey's skate guide does tell you to change your hollow for it: "a sharper skate hollow is recommended for smaller players or for players who skate at frigid rinks to help them dig more into the harder ice," and "a duller skate hollow is recommended for larger players or for those who skate at warmer rinks to prevent them from 'sinking' into the softer ice." Pure Hockey's sharpening guide points the opposite way on the underlying physics: "colder, harder ice wears skate edges more quickly and often provides more bite, while softer ice creates less resistance and may feel less responsive" — i.e. cold ice already grips, so if anything it is warm ice that needs help. Both cannot be right, and on the disputed point the evidence favours Discount Hockey. Bauer's own sharpening guide says it plainly: "On colder ice, it'll be harder to dig in and you'll skate on top of the surface. If the ice is warmer and softer, you'll dig in more, which adds to fatigue and less glide." The peer-reviewed picture agrees. Colder ice really is harder — a 2025 Scientific Reports review of arena ice quality reports that "across all studies, the pattern is clear: ice becomes harder or stronger as the temperature decreases" — and harder ice gives the blade less purchase, not more: "Ice that is too hard may reduce this penetration, potentially affecting agility and control, whereas softer ice can increase penetration but at the cost of greater ice degradation and higher friction." Pure Hockey's "more bite" is the half that does not survive contact with the literature. (Two caveats worth keeping. Gliding friction is not linear in temperature — it bottoms out and then rises again in very cold ice; de Koning and colleagues measured the minimum "at an ice surface temperature of about -7 degrees C". And no study crosses hollow radius with ice temperature: the physics of grip is settled, the prescription of a particular hollow for a particular rink is not.) What everyone agrees on is that cold, hard ice eats edges faster, so it costs you sharpening intervals whichever way you read it. The practical answer: leave your hollow alone. Your feel for your edges is calibrated to it (below), and chasing rink temperature means never having a baseline to compare against. If you play regularly at one unusually warm or unusually cold rink and want to experiment, move one step and give it several skates.

Typical hollows

  • ½ inch is the industry-standard default and the best all-round choice — "neither too sharp nor too dull." If you don't know what you want, ask for a half inch.
  • Recreational players commonly start at ½".
  • Heavier players, or anyone who wants more glide, often prefer ⅝".
  • Players who want maximum edge bite choose ⅜", accepting that it takes more effort to maintain speed.
  • Once you know your baseline, move one step at a time — to 9/16" or 7/16" — rather than jumping.

Skate on a consistent hollow. Your whole feel for your edges is calibrated to it. Changing hollow and technique in the same week means you cannot tell which one caused what.

Flat-Bottom V (FBV) is an alternative grind that cuts a flat centre section with angled edges instead of a rounded hollow, aiming for strong bite and good glide. Not every machine can do it — ask before you rely on it.

How often to sharpen

  • A common rule of thumb is every 20–30 hours on the ice. Many players settle into once or twice a month.
  • Over-sharpening wears your steel out prematurely. Under-sharpening costs you edges. Pick a routine based on your schedule and adjust.
  • Sharpen new skates before their first use. They arrive with a factory finish, not a game-ready edge.
  • Outdoor ice, which is often harder and carries grit, eats edges faster.
  • Using soakers (soft blade covers) between sessions extends the interval.

How to tell you need a sharpen

  • On the ice: the blade chatters, pulls to one side, or wobbles. You slide out of turns you normally hold. Your stops go from a clean spray to a scrape. Push-offs feel weak.
  • By hand: run a finger lightly along the length of the blade feeling for nicks and gouges. The edge should feel sharp.
  • By eye: hold the blade under a bright light and look straight down at the edge. A sharp edge is a line and reflects almost nothing. If you can see a reflection along the edge, it has rounded over — time to sharpen.
  • For parents: a young player who suddenly can't stop, slides out of turns, or says the skates feel "slippery" or "weird" is usually describing dull steel.

Expect to pay roughly $10–$20 per sharpen at a US shop, often less if you leave them overnight. At-home stones and re-edgers run $20–$40 and are best treated as touch-up tools between proper sharpens, not replacements — some of them remove more steel than a machine would.

Sharpening is not profiling

Sharpening sets the hollow across the blade. Profiling (contouring) reshapes the runner from heel to toe — how much steel is on the ice at once, and where the balance point sits. Profiling changes acceleration, stability, agility and stride feel. It is a tuning exercise for players who already know what they want; sharpening is routine maintenance everyone needs.


Sticks — The Four Variables

A stick is a specification, not a brand. Four numbers determine almost everything about how it plays.

Everything in this section is a preference, not a rule of hockey. The starting points below are starting points. Two players of identical build reasonably end up with different sticks.

1. Length

The standard fitting check: stand the stick vertically on its toe, in front of you.

  • In shoes, the butt end should reach roughly your nose.
  • In skates, roughly your chin.

That is a starting point, and the position you play pushes it either way — though this is convention and preference rather than anything the rules impose:

  • Defencemen tend to go longer. A longer stick extends your reach in the defensive-zone gap, makes poke-checks and stick-lifts effective from further away, gets into passing lanes from further out, and helps you keep the puck away from your body while walking the offensive blue line.   • Forwards often go shorter. A shorter stick handles the puck closer to the body, is quicker in tight, and makes it easier to get your hands out in front for a fast release — see Shooting and Puck Handling.

The costs of getting it wrong are symmetrical: too long and you cannot handle the puck in close, you stand taller (which wrecks the knee bend everything else depends on), and your release slows down. Too short and you give up reach, and you have to bend further than is comfortable to keep the blade flat.

Under NHL Rule 10.1 the maximum shaft length is 63 inches; USA Hockey allows 65. Retail sizes run roughly: youth 38–44", junior 46–53", intermediate 54–55", senior 56–63".

2. Flex

Flex is a stiffness rating: the number of pounds of force needed to bend the shaft one inch. A 100-flex stick takes 100 lb to bend it an inch. Higher number, stiffer stick. Retail sticks run from about 30 flex for small children to 110 for large adults.

The rule of thumb: start at roughly half your body weight in pounds. A 180 lb player starts at 85–90; a 200 lb player at 100. Then adjust:

  • Round up if you are tall or strong for your weight.
  • Round down if you are average or below in height or strength.

Why it matters. A shot's power does not come only from your arms — it comes from loading the shaft like a spring and letting it unload into the puck. That only happens if you can actually bend it.

  • Too stiff and you cannot fully load the shaft. You get less power, not more, and a slower release, because you are muscling the puck instead of letting the stick do work.
  • Too whippy and you overpower it. The shaft bends further than you intended, the puck leaves at an angle you didn't choose, and shots become inconsistent. It also feels vague when you are receiving a hard pass.

The practical test: you want a flex you can load consistently without overdoing it.

Cutting a stick raises its effective flex. A shorter shaft is a shorter lever, so it takes more force to bend it the same amount — the number printed on the stick no longer describes what you are holding. The retail guidance is to treat about three inches as the threshold: if you plan to cut more than three inches off, buy a lower flex than the calculation says; if you plan to add more than three inches with an end plug, buy a higher flex. This is the single most common way players end up on the wrong flex without realising it — they buy the right number and then saw four inches off it.

Positionally, and again as convention rather than rule: defencemen often prefer stiffer shafts, partly for long point shots and partly for the solid feel when battling; forwards often prefer softer flexes for quicker loading and faster release.

Kick point is a secondary variable — where along the shaft the stick is designed to bend most. Low kick flexes near the blade for a quick release; mid kick is the traditional feel and loads more power over a longer motion; high kick loads the whole shaft, favouring big slap shots; constant and dual kick designs respond to where your bottom hand is. Get length and flex right first; kick point is a refinement.

3. Curve

The blade's curve is described by three things: where the curve is, how open the face is, and the toe shape.

Where the curve sits — heel, mid, or toe:

The puck naturally settles into the deepest part of the curve, and then has to travel from there to the end of the blade as you shoot. That distance is what changes.

  • Heel curve. The puck starts furthest from the toe, so it spends longest on the blade — a longer release, with more time to build velocity. Traditionally favoured for slap shots and by defencemen.
  • Mid curve. The all-rounder. Good puck spin, balanced across shot types, generally the safest first choice.
  • Toe curve. The curve is out near the end, which makes it easier to scoop or lift the puck away from someone's stick and easier to toe-drag (dragging the puck back toward yourself on the very end of the blade to pull it around a defender's stick). Favoured for wrist shots and puck handling.

Face angle — open versus closed:

Hold the stick upright and look down at the blade. If you can see the face of the blade, it is open; if you mostly see the top edge, it is closed. This is loft, exactly like the difference between a 9-iron and a 3-iron.

  • Open face. Lifts the puck sooner and with less follow-through — good for scoring in tight, banging in rebounds from the goalmouth, and going top shelf (into the upper part of the net, under the crossbar) from close range without space to wind up. It also disguises your shot: the blade looks the same whether you are going high or low, and goalies read blade angle. It makes saucer passes (a pass flipped through the air to travel over a stick or skate and land flat) easier, and it makes receiving passes on your backhand easier, which matters if you play your off-wing.
  • Closed face. More accurate, because the puck stays square to the blade through the shooting motion. Better puck control and better for long, flat passes — see Passing and Receiving. Needs a fuller follow-through to elevate, which telegraphs more. Generally the better choice for defencemen and for all-round players.

The backhand trade-off is unavoidable. As How To Hockey puts it, "what helps the forehand shot hurts the backhander." A deep, open curve makes forehand elevation easy and makes backhand shooting harder and less accurate — the backhand is fired off the convex side of the blade with nothing to cup the puck. If you care about your backhand, and Shooting argues strongly that you should, favour a shallower, less open pattern. Developing players in particular are usually better served by a less open pattern, because it forces you to learn real shooting and stickhandling mechanics rather than relying on loft.

Toe shape. A round toe gives more blade surface at the end, which many players find easier for toe-drags and puck control. A square toe makes it easier to separate a puck from the boards — a real advantage for defencemen digging dump-ins out of the wall — and gives a slightly bigger surface for blocking shots and knocking down passes.

Blade length varies by pattern with no industry standard, capped at 12½ inches by rule. A shorter blade releases quicker (less distance for the puck to travel); a longer blade builds more velocity and gives more surface for receiving passes.

4. Lie — the least understood variable

Lie is the angle between the shaft and the blade — in practice, how upright the shaft stands when the blade is flat on the ice. Pure Hockey's stick guide gives the numbers as running 4 to 8; its stick-fitting page narrows the practical range to 4.0 to 6.0 in half increments, with most sticks a 4.5, 5.0 or 5.5. (The two pages disagree on the range; the fitting page is the one describing what is actually on the rack.) The same stick guide converts them: a lie of 5 corresponds to roughly a 135° angle, and each lie number up or down changes it by about 2° (a 6 lie ≈ 133°, a 4 lie ≈ 137°). Higher number, more upright stick.

Why it matters. With the correct lie, the whole bottom edge of your blade contacts the ice when you are in your normal playing stance. With the wrong lie, only the heel or only the toe touches, and everything degrades:

  • Passes you receive skip off the raised part of the blade instead of settling.
  • Stickhandling gets loose, because the puck is bouncing on a tilted surface.
  • Shots go off-line, because the blade meets the puck at an angle you didn't intend.
  • The blade wears unevenly and dies early.

How to check yours in ten seconds: turn your stick over and look at the bottom of the blade. If one area — usually the toe or the heel — is significantly more worn than the rest, your lie is wrong. A correct lie wears evenly along the blade.

Which way to go:

  • Lower lie (shaft more angled) suits a player who skates in a deep crouch, is taller, or carries the puck further from the body. Traditionally more common among defencemen.
  • Higher lie (shaft more upright) suits a player who skates more upright, or who keeps the puck tight to their feet. Traditionally more common among forwards.

Note the interaction: lie and length are coupled. Cutting a stick down effectively raises the lie you need, because your hands come down and the shaft angle changes. If you cut four inches off a stick and your blade suddenly rides on its heel, that is why.

Shaft finish and construction

Grip versus clear. A grip (textured) shaft stops the stick spinning in wet gloves — most players prefer it. A clear shaft lets your bottom hand slide freely up and down, which some players want for stickhandling, and it usually needs tape on the shaft to compensate.

One-piece versus two-piece. One-piece is the modern standard. A two-piece (separate shaft and blade) lets you mix and match, and lets you salvage half the stick when the other half breaks — a genuine budget option.

Composite versus wood. Composite is lighter and engineered to flex at a designed point, giving a faster release and more velocity. Wood is heavier, deader, cheaper, and arguably easier to receive hard passes with, but comes in far fewer flex options than composite — wood senior sticks are usually sold as one stiff "senior" flex rather than across a range. (The often-quoted "90–100 flex" figure for wood does trace to a real spec sheet — HockeyWorld's listing for the Sher-Wood 5030SC Feather-Light Senior gives "Flex:90-100" — but that is one discontinued model, now shown as "Currently Unavailable", not a property of wood sticks in general. Other wood seniors are specced differently: the CCM Ultimate ABS senior "comes in 85 flex". Use the numbers as illustrations, not as a rule.) The lack of choice is the real point, and it is easy to verify: the CCM Ultimate senior is sold in 85 flex only, with just left and right hand as options, and Sherwood's own product page for the 5030 senior offers pattern and hand and no flex option at all. A useful trick: practise with a wood stick and play with your composite — the extra weight builds hand and wrist strength, like a donut on a baseball bat.


Protective Fit — Where the Gaps Are

The general principle: protective gear that is too big protects less, not more. Oversized pads slide out of position on impact, so the pad arrives somewhere other than where the puck does. They also drag against each other, restrict your stride and shooting motion, and expose the joints they were bought to cover.

How each piece should sit

  • Shoulder pads. The tips of your shoulders must be centred in the shoulder caps. Try them on standing, with your pants — there should be a small gap between the bottom of the pads and the top of the pants when you stand upright, because you will be bent forward in your skating stance and that gap closes. Sized by chest measurement plus height or weight.
  • Elbow pads. Sized by measuring from the cuff of your glove to the middle of your bicep. Try them on with your shoulder pads and gloves on — that is the only way to see whether the three pieces actually meet. Tighten the straps so the velcro stays fastened under your jersey through a full game, and so the pad cannot rotate if you fall on it.
  • Gloves. Sized in inches from your fingertip to the end of your elbow pad — typically 8" youth to 15" senior. Round up if you are between sizes. The cuff of the glove should meet the bottom of your elbow pad with no gap. Your fingertips should just reach the end without being forced.
  • Pants. Sized close to your jeans/waist size, confirmed by measuring your waist just above the hips. For length, Pure Hockey's fitting guide is explicit: standing upright, "the bottom of the pants should overlap the kneecap area of the shin guards by roughly one-third to halfway." Reaching the kneecap is not enough — you want the pants sitting over the top of the guard, because the gap opens as soon as you bend into a stance.
  • Shin guards. Put your skates on and tie them, sit with your feet flat and your knees bent to 90°, and measure from the top of the skate tongue to the centre of your kneecap. If you wear the guard over the skate tongue, add about an inch on top of that. Your kneecap must sit centred in the knee cup at all times — strap them tight enough that they cannot rotate during play.

The three coverage gaps that cause the most injuries

1. The gap between shin guard and pants. This is the classic. Pants that are too short, shin guards that are too short, or both, leave a strip of bare thigh just above the knee — precisely where a rising puck, a stick and the top of the boards all arrive. The pants must overlap the top of the shin guard while you are in a skating stance, not while you are standing in a shop. Bend into a hockey stance in the changing room and check. If a gap opens, one of the two pieces is wrong.

2. Elbow pad rotation. An elbow pad that spins on your arm when you fall puts its hard cap on the inside of your arm and presents bare joint to the ice. This is the most common way players break or badly bruise an elbow while wearing an elbow pad. It is a strap-tension and sizing problem, and it is entirely preventable: strap it so you cannot twist it by hand.

3. Wrist exposure. The strip between the top of the glove cuff and the bottom of the elbow pad. Slashes land there, and it is the part of your arm you cannot see. Both the IIHF and USA Hockey now recommend cut-resistant sleeves or undergarments for exactly this reason — the IIHF "strongly" (Rule 9.5), USA Hockey simply "recommended" (Rule 304(g)). Long elbow pads and correctly sized gloves close the gap for free; a cut-resistant sleeve closes it properly.

A fourth worth noting: tendon guards — the padding at the back of the ankle above the boot — are on USA Hockey's list of equipment you are responsible for. Most modern skates include them; check that yours does and that your socks are not holding them out of position.


Helmets and Facial Protection

Certification

Three separate systems, one for each of the big markets. The mark you need is determined by where you play, not by where the helmet was made.

United States — HECC. The Hockey Equipment Certification Council is a US non-profit, and its sticker is what American leagues reference. (The origin story is confirmed by HECC itself, which states on its own homepage that it is "a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that was created at the request of USA Hockey in 1978". One wrinkle worth knowing: USA Hockey's own article "What the Heck is HECC?" dates it to 1976 — "The Hockey Equipment Certification Council (HECC), organized in 1976…" — and does not mention having requested it. The two parties disagree by two years; HECC's own account is used here.) HECC does not write standards; it certifies against ASTM ones, which is the detail missing from most "check the sticker" advice:

  • HECC certification expires. This is written into the USA Hockey rulebook itself: "HECC certification includes an expiration date on the sticker and a helmet that has an expiration date that has expired is no longer considered certified. The player may not wear a helmet that does not have a valid and current certification sticker." HECC's own site gives the interval: "The expiration date of the label is 6.5 years after the date of manufacture." That figure is confirmed for helmets. HECC-certified neck laceration protectors are five years, not 6.5 — HECC published that as a correction to a previously stated seven-year figure.

Canada — CSA, and it is mandatory. Only CSA-certified helmets are approved for Hockey Canada play; HECC certification does not apply in Canada, and Hockey Canada says so explicitly. The standards are:

  • CSA Z262.1:15 (R2025)Ice hockey helmets. Sixth edition, published 2015, reaffirmed 2025.
  • CSA Z262.2:15 (R2025)Face protectors for use in ice hockey. Fifth edition, published 2015, reaffirmed 2025.

Hockey Canada Rule 3.6(b) is unambiguous, and note that it covers the cage as well as the helmet: "While on the ice, including pre-game warm-ups, all players, including goaltenders, will wear a CSA-certified hockey helmet, to which a CSA-certified facial protector must be securely attached and not altered in any way. Any alteration to a CSA-certified helmet or facial protector automatically destroys the certification." There is also federal law: the Ice Hockey Helmet Regulations SOR/2016-186, made under the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act, require that ice hockey helmets sold in Canada "meet the requirements of standard Z262.1… as amended from time to time" — an open reference, so it tracks whatever CSA's current edition is.

Europe — CE marking against EN ISO 10256. The IIHF rulebook names no certification body, requiring only "a helmet manufactured and approved specifically for ice hockey", but the CE mark you see on equipment sold in Europe now has a specific standard behind it:

  • EN ISO 10256-1:2024General requirements
  • EN ISO 10256-2:2024Head protectors for skaters (this is the helmet standard). An earlier EN ISO 10256-2:2018 does exist, and the 2024 edition does supersede it. The supersession is recorded by the Polish standards body PKN, a CEN member that publishes national-adoption data: its entry for PN-EN ISO 10256-2:2018-08 (which "implements EN ISO 10256-2:2018 [IDT], ISO 10256-2:2016 [IDT]") is marked "Wycofana i zastąpiona przez PN-EN ISO 10256-2:2025-06" — withdrawn and replaced — with a withdrawal date of 11 June 2025; the replacing document implements EN ISO 10256-2:2024. ISO's own catalogue agrees at the ISO level: ISO 10256-2:2016 is listed as Withdrawn with "New version available: ISO 10256-2:2024". Note the edition-year trap that makes this confusing: EN ISO 10256-2:2018 is the European adoption of ISO 10256-2:2016 — there is no ISO edition dated 2018. And the 2018 EN was never harmonised under the PPE Regulation, so its absence from the harmonised list below is expected rather than evidence that it did not exist.
  • EN ISO 10256-3:2024Face and eye protectors for skaters
  • EN ISO 10256-4:2024Head and face protectors for goalkeepers

All four were cited in the Official Journal by Commission Implementing Decision (EU) 2026/1279 of 12 June 2026, giving presumption of conformity with the EU PPE Regulation (EU) 2016/425 from 16 June 2026. That is very recent — no earlier edition of EN ISO 10256 appears in the harmonised list at all — so equipment on shelves may still predate it.

Neck protectors are the item where the three systems diverge most, and the Canadian rule is the strict one. A BNQ-certified neck laceration protector is mandatory in Canada: Hockey Canada Rule 3.6(c) requires that "the wearing of a BNQ-certified throat protector is required for players registered in minor and female hockey", and adds that "goaltenders who wear an attachment to the mask or helmet designed to protect the throat, must still wear a BNQ-certified throat protector" — a dangler is not a substitute. The applicable standard is CAN/BNQ 9415-370, Neck Protectors for Ice Hockey and Ringette Players. In the US, by contrast, USA Hockey merely accepts BNQ-certified protectors alongside HECC-certified ones through the 2026-27 season. If you are buying in Canada, or for a child playing in Canada, treat BNQ as a requirement and not as an American footnote.

Check the sticker before you buy, and especially before you accept a hand-me-down. A cheap clearance helmet is often cheap because its certification has expired, which makes it unusable for youth or travel hockey even though it is physically fine.

Cage versus visor versus full shield

  • Cage. Metal bars. Maximum protection, no fogging, no scratching, unrestricted airflow. Slight visual obstruction from the bars — which almost everyone stops noticing within a few sessions. The default for anyone who does not have a specific reason to wear something else — but note that it is not the only legal option below adult level. USA Hockey Rule 304(d) requires a HECC-certified facemask, which a HECC-certified full shield satisfies just as a cage does; IIHF women's and U18 hockey likewise require full-face protection, not a cage specifically.
  • Visor (half shield). Clear polycarbonate covering the eyes and nose. Best optical clarity, no chin or mouth protection at all — wear a mouthguard. The IIHF requires it as a minimum for all players born after 31 December 1974, fixed so it cannot be flipped up, and bans tinted ones so opponents and officials can make eye contact.
  • Full shield (full visor). A clear polycarbonate cage-equivalent. Full facial coverage with better sightlines than a cage; can fog and can scratch. Permitted by IIHF as one of the three facial-protection types.
  • Combination cage/shield hybrids exist and split the difference.

A cage or shield is sized separately from the helmet. A medium helmet does not guarantee a medium cage — even in a combo package. Fit both.

The fit test

  1. Measure your head circumference with a soft tape about ½"–1" above your eyebrows. Your fitted hat size is a usable proxy.
  2. Open the helmet to its largest adjustment, put it on, and then tighten it down gradually until it is snug. Most modern helmets adjust with side tabs or a rear dial, and adjacent sizes overlap substantially — a small at maximum is close to a medium at minimum.
  3. The front edge should sit about ½ inch above your eyebrows, flat and level. It must not tilt forward, slide back, or wobble.
  4. Shake your head. The helmet should move with your skull, not on it. If it shifts, it is too big. If it creates pressure points or a headache, it is too small.
  5. Wear it for a few minutes before you commit. Hot spots reveal themselves slowly.
  6. Fit the cage. Your chin should be centred in the chin cup and the cup strapped snugly against your chin — Pure Hockey's guidance is that the cage should "fit snugly around the chin cup" and sit flush against the chin, with no gap figure given. If the cage doesn't close to your chin, the whole helmet will be displaced when you take a hit. Looking straight ahead, your eyes should be between the bars, not looking through one.
  7. Chin strap fastened. Every rule set requires it, and an unfastened strap turns a helmet into a hat.

Replacing a helmet after an impact

A helmet that has taken a serious impact should be replaced. Protective foams work by crushing — that is how they absorb energy — and crushed foam does not un-crush. A helmet that looks fine externally can have a compressed liner underneath and a shell with hairline stress damage. The same applies to a helmet that has been dropped hard onto concrete, or left in a hot car, or worn well past its certification date. This is not just folk wisdom — both a manufacturer and a governing body say it outright. Bauer's own helmet manual: "Helmet and liners should be inspected prior to each use and the helmet must be replaced if the foam or internal attachments have broken down. The helmets must be discarded if the shell is cracked or deformed. If helmet is severely impacted, it should be replaced immediately. Exposure to violent impact or stress may reduce its protective function." Hockey Canada's helmet-certification bulletin: "Helmets that are cracked, have loose fittings or missing liner pieces, or that have been subjected to a severe impact should be replaced." Hockey Canada also notes what does not determine lifespan: "There is currently no expiration on CSA certification and the date on the CSA sticker represents the year the helmet was manufactured", and the HECC sticker's date "is related only to the length of certification granted by HECC for a given helmet and is not an indication of the lifespan of a hockey helmet."

Two related realities worth being honest about:

  • There is no concussion-proof helmet. Helmets are extremely good at preventing skull fractures and lacerations, and only partially effective against the rotational accelerations that cause most concussions. Higher-end models use suspension liners, liquid-filled bladders and advanced foams (Poron XRD, D3O) specifically aimed at rotational impact, and the likelihood of injury in a well-designed modern helmet should be lower — but the risk never goes to zero.
  • Spending sense. Pure Hockey's helmet guide makes the point sharply: it makes very little sense to spend $200–$250 on a stick and $600–$800 on skates and then protect your head with a $60 bucket. (That skate figure is their illustration of a keen player's spend; it sits near the top of the $50–$950 range quoted earlier in this document, not in the middle of it. The argument works at any point on the range — scale the numbers to what you actually paid.) Helmets in a US retail catalogue have ranged from about $27 for a basic model to about $300 for a flagship. Buy the best-fitting helmet you can afford, and buy fit before features.

Goalie Equipment — An Overview

Goaltending gear is a different sport's worth of kit. This section is deliberately a summary; see Goaltender for how it is actually used.

The list: mask (with optional throat protector / "dangler" hanging from the chin), chest and arm protector, leg pads, catch glove (trapper), blocker, goalie pants, knee and thigh protectors, goalie jock, goalie skates, and a goalie stick.

Three things a skater should know about it:

1. It is sized completely differently. Goalie leg pads are not sized like shin guards. Sizing starts from a floor-to-knee measurement taken seated, plus barefoot height, plus your skate size, and the fit is judged by where your knee lands in the knee cradle in both your stance and your butterfly (the save position where the goalie drops to both knees and fans the pads flat across the ice) — not by height or age. Pads also come in +1" and +2" thigh-rise options, adding an inch or two at the top for extra five-hole coverage (the five-hole is the gap between a goalie's legs) in the butterfly, at some cost in mobility. Unlike a chest protector, which should be snug and shouldn't shift, leg pads should be secure but able to rotate freely into and out of the butterfly.

2. It is heavily regulated by dimension. Where skater equipment rules are mostly about safety, goalie equipment rules are about how much net you are allowed to cover. NHL Rule 11.2 caps leg pads at 11 inches in extreme width and sets each goalie an individually calculated maximum height based on their floor-to-knee and knee-to-pelvis measurements. Rule 11.5 caps knee protection at a contoured 9 inches. USA Hockey Rule 303 caps leg guards at 11 inches wide and 38 inches long, the blocker at 8 × 15 inches, and the catch glove at an 8-inch cuff, 45-inch circumference and 18-inch catching portion. IIHF Rule 9.11 requires goalie skates to have a protective cowling at the front of each boot and bans "cheaters" added to gain ice contact. It is compulsory for all goalkeepers to wear helmets and full facemasks (USA Hockey Rule 303(b)); no form-fitted facemasks are permitted.

3. It is a much larger investment. A full set of goalie gear costs several times a skater's kit, wears out on a similar timescale, and is far harder to buy secondhand in the right size. Many clubs own a set of house goalie gear for exactly this reason — ask before you buy.


Buying Strategy

New versus used

Safe to buy used, provided you check fit and condition:

  • Sticks — as long as the length, flex, curve and lie are right for you, and there are no cracks, soft spots or rattles. A cheap way to try a curve you have never used.
  • Pants, shin guards, shoulder pads, elbow pads — inspect for cracked plastic caps, compressed foam and broken straps, then wash them.
  • Bags, socks, jerseys — obviously.
  • Skates, with real caveats: only if they fit you properly (the boot has already moulded to somebody else's foot, which is the problem), the quarter package is not broken down, the eyelets are intact, and there is enough steel left. A well-cared-for second-tier boot in the right size is a bargain; a broken-down boot in the wrong size is worse than useless.

Do not buy used:

  • Helmets. This is the firm one. You cannot see a compressed liner or a hairline shell crack, you usually cannot know the impact history, and the certification may well have expired — which in most youth and travel leagues makes it illegal as well as unsafe. A hand-me-down helmet from a sibling has the same problems.
  • Anything with an expired certification sticker — helmets, facemasks, neck guards.
  • Mouthguards and jocks/jills. For reasons that need no explanation.
  • Cages and visors with deep scratches or cracks. A cracked visor must be replaced; the IIHF requires a player whose visor cracks in play to leave the ice immediately.

Where to spend and where to save

Spend on, in this order:

  1. Skates — the biggest performance difference in the bag, and the one piece where a bad purchase actively holds back your development.
  2. Helmet — the biggest consequence.
  3. Stick — but spend on getting the specification right first. A correctly specified $80 stick beats a wrongly specified $300 one, every time.
  4. Gloves — you feel the puck through them, and cheap gloves wear through at the palm quickly.

Save on:

  • Socks, base layers, bag, tape — commodity items.
  • Shin guards and elbow pads — fit dominates; the model barely matters at recreational level.
  • Pants — unless you play a contact league, mid-range is plenty.
  • Shoulder pads — in a non-checking adult league, lightweight pads are entirely adequate. In a checking league this moves up the priority list substantially.

Kitting out a beginner on a budget

  1. Ask the club first. Many associations and rinks loan gear to new players, and many hold a used-gear swap. Goalie gear especially is often club-owned. Some beginner programmes supply the kit outright rather than lending itGetting Started names the ones that do, and what each includes, so check before you buy anything on this list.
  2. Buy last season's models. Manufacturers refresh lines annually; last year's mid-range boot at clearance is usually the best value in the shop.
  3. Get properly fitted in person for skates and helmet, even if you buy online afterwards. These are the two you cannot guess.
  4. Buy the rest used or entry-level, and buy fit over features — but "the rest" excludes the do-not-buy-used list above: helmets, facemasks and neck guards (new, every time), mouthguards, jocks/jills, and any cage or visor with deep scratches or cracks.
  5. Buy a mouthguard and a neck guard. They cost almost nothing and they are required in a lot of leagues.
  6. Buy two rolls of tape and a puck. You will use both immediately.

The order to upgrade in

  1. Skates, once you are skating more than about once a week — move up to a mid-range, bakeable boot.
  2. Stick specification — get length, flex, lie and curve right. This costs nothing extra if you buy the right stick next time.
  3. Helmet, if yours is old, expired, or doesn't fit properly.
  4. Gloves, when the palms go.
  5. Steel — better runners on a decent holder are a cheap upgrade to an existing skate, and having two sets of steel doubles your time between sharpenings.
  6. Everything else, when it wears out.

Maintenance and Care

Drying — the one habit that matters

Take everything out of the bag as soon as you get home. Every time. Wet gear left zipped in a bag is a warm, dark, humid environment full of organic material, which is exactly what bacteria and fungi want. As How To Hockey puts it: "The longer you leave wet ANYTHING in your bag, the more it will stink."

The smell is the visible symptom; the real reasons are more serious. Damp gear degrades faster — foams break down, stitching rots, and skate steel rusts. And hockey gives you a steady supply of small cuts, blisters and abrasions, which are the openings that skin bacteria need to become an infection. The NHS notes that staph and MRSA live harmlessly on skin, spread mainly by touch (including touching things a carrier has touched), and only cause an infection when they get inside the body through a break in the skin. Clean, dry gear and clean skin remove most of that opportunity. There is also a hockey-specific literature on this: a Sports Medicine review by Tlougan and colleagues covering figure skaters, ice-hockey players and speed skaters reports that the infections most often seen in ice-skating athletes are "tinea pedis, onychomycosis, pitted keratolysis, warts and folliculitis", and that "awareness, prompt treatment and the use of preventative measures are particularly important in managing such dermatoses that are easily spread from person to person in training facilities." Its prevention advice is the advice given here — keep gear ventilated and dry, keep your skin clean, and wear sandals in shared changing areas. (That review establishes which infections occur and how to prevent them, but there is no published infection rate attributable to unwashed equipment.)

Practical routine:

  • Hang everything — a drying rack, a spare rail, or hooks in a garage. Run a fan. Airflow does more than time.
  • Air-dry base layers; wash them after every single use.
  • Full wash every few weeks. Almost everything except skates and helmets can go in a washing machine: jerseys, socks, base layers, and the protective gear itself. Use the longest cycle with a pre-wash and an extra rinse, and select the bulky/large-load setting if you have one. Avoid chlorine bleach — it can degrade the bonding agents and foams in your equipment; oxygen bleach is fine. A full wash typically buys you three to six weeks.
  • Wipe helmets and skates by hand. Anti-bacterial spray on already-dry gear helps with odour.
  • Shower promptly after you play, and don't share towels.

Blades, holders and rust

  • Wipe your steel and holders dry after every skate, before the skates go back in the bag. Water sitting on steel is what rusts it.
  • Use soft blade covers (soakers) — the terry lining absorbs residual moisture. Hard guards let you walk on concrete but do nothing about rust; some soft guards with a rubberised sole do both. Never store skates in soakers, though; take them off once the blades are dry.
  • Air the skates out at home, and if you are being thorough, pull the footbeds out so moisture isn't trapped underneath.
  • Replace your steel when it is chipped, cracked or broken (usually from a blocked shot or a step onto concrete), when repeated cross-grinding has worn it very short, or when rust has eaten into it.
  • Never walk on concrete, tile or metal in bare blades. One step ruins an edge and can gouge the steel.

Laces, tape and general lifespan

  • Replace skate laces before they break, which they will do in the changing room five minutes before a game. Waxed laces hold tension better and let you tie sections of the boot at different tightnesses; unwaxed laces give a more uniform, looser feel. Keep a spare pair in the bag.
  • Re-tape the blade when the tape wears through — some players re-tape before every game, which is preference, not necessity. Clean the adhesive residue off first with warm water and mild dish soap, or by warming it with a hairdryer and wiping it away.
  • Rough lifespans, which vary enormously with use: tape — a game or a few; laces — a season; sticks — unpredictable, and they break without warning; skates — entry-level boots break down in a couple of seasons, good boots last years with care; helmets — replace at certification expiry or after a significant impact, whichever comes first; protective pads — until the foam is compressed, the plastic is cracked, or you have outgrown them.

Taping

Tape does four things: it protects the blade from wear, it stops water and ice building up on it, it gives the puck something with a bit of grip to sit against, and — on the shaft — it gives you a knob and a grip that your hands can find without looking.

There is genuinely no right way to tape a stick. Players tape differently because they want different things, and the variation is preference, not technique.

Blade taping

The mechanics that are not preference: wrap smoothly, overlap evenly, and don't let it wrinkle or bunch. An uneven tape job gives you an unpredictable blade surface, which shows up on receptions and on shots. Trim creases and toe flaps off with scissors.

Most players start by laying a single strip around the toe edge — over the top and along the bottom — flattened smooth, before wrapping the blade itself.

Then pick a pattern:

  • The classic. Heel-to-toe, leaving a little of the heel and toe exposed, covering the working middle of the blade.
  • The sock. Heel-to-toe with full coverage from end to end, so the blade looks like it is wearing a gym sock. Maximum protection, slightly more weight.
  • Toe tape job. Starts at the centre of the blade and wraps forward, covering only the toe. Popular with players who use the toe of the blade for handling and want a clean heel.
  • The five strand. Five wraps just past the centre towards the toe. Minimal, quick, and easy to redo.

Direction — toe-to-heel or heel-to-toe — is personal preference for skaters. Goalies are conventionally advised to wrap toe-to-heel so the puck rolls off the blade cleanly when they pass and shoot.

Colour is also preference with a story attached: black tape is said to hide the puck against the blade from the goalie; white tape is equally popular, and the black scuff marks a puck leaves on white tape are claimed to do the same job. Neither is a proven effect — there is no published study behind either. Worth knowing that the one authoritative voice on the question argues the opposite of the black-tape folklore: David Marcoux, a former NHL goaltending coach, writing for NHL.com, says "from a goalie's standpoint, it's simply easier to see the black puck coming off a white stick blade", and notes that "there is at least one team in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League, the Sherbrooke Phoenix, that mandates white tape on stick blades of defensemen for this very reason." That is a coach's stated belief, not data — he offers none — but it is better sourced than the black-tape claim, which rests on retailer copy hedged as "may also help".

Wax goes on after the tape — four to six horizontal passes across the face of the blade, repeated a few times, and the same on the back. It keeps water and ice off the tape, adds grip on the puck, and makes the tape job last longer. Use hockey-specific wax; general-purpose waxes gum up. Rubbing a puck back and forth along the blade does a similar job. (Wayne Gretzky's baby-powder finish, which dulls the tackiness slightly, is a real thing but is not a substitute for wax and is easy to overdo.)

Knob and grip

The knob at the butt end stops the stick sliding out of your top hand and gives you something to grip when you pick the stick up off the ice. Build it how you like it:

  • Start a base with a folded scrap of paper or napkin over the butt end.
  • Tear the tape in half lengthwise and wrap the thinner strips around the top until the knob is the size you want.
  • Compress it in your hand and smooth it down.
  • Then run full-width tape down the shaft 10–12 inches for grip.

A ribbed grip is a common variation: twist a foot or so of tape into a rope, spiral it down the shaft below the knob, then cover the spiral with a normal wrap. Finishing with clear tape reduces friction on your glove palms, which are the first thing to wear out. The candy cane is a spaced spiral down the shaft, about 1½–2 inches between wraps.

Goalies tape a large knob specifically so the stick stays in hand during poke checks, and many tape the paddle for rebound control.

Shin pad and sock taping

Clear hockey tape (shin tape) around the sock over the shin guard does two jobs: it holds the guard in position so it cannot rotate mid-game, and it holds the sock up. Two or three wraps at the top of the calf and two or three at the ankle is the standard. Do not wrap so tightly that you restrict circulation, and be aware that a full wrap at the top of the calf can be uncomfortable over a long game — most players tape below the widest part.

Some players also tape a wrap around the top of the skate tongue or across the boot; that is preference.


Bag and Pre-Game Routine

Choosing a bag

Match the bag to your gear and your body, not to the biggest one on the shelf. A bag too large for your kit is annoying to carry and lets everything slide around; kids in particular end up hauling bags that strain a shoulder.

  • Carry bags with a shoulder strap are the classic and still the most common.
  • Wheeled bags take the load off your shoulders entirely and are the norm for young players and goalies. Most also have a carry strap.
  • Backpack bags suit players travelling light; some have wheels too.
  • Ventilation matters more than it sounds. Modern polyester bags dry faster and breathe better than old leather or PVC ones, and bags with mesh panels limit how much stink builds up between the changing room and home. Fabric weight is quoted in denier (420D, 600D, 1000D) — higher is stronger but stiffer.
  • A skate compartment keeps sharp steel away from soft gear, which is otherwise how bags and gloves get cut open.
  • A stick bag is worth it if you travel to tournaments by bus or plane.

The checklist

Run this before you leave the house. Nothing on it is optional and every one of them has been forgotten by somebody, in the car park, twenty minutes before a game:

The dressing order most players use

There is a reason this order is nearly universal: each layer has to go on before the thing that overlaps it, and you cannot bend down to lace skates once your shoulder pads and jersey are on.

  1. Base layers
  2. Jock / jill
  3. Shin guards, then socks pulled over them and taped
  4. Pants
  5. Skates — laced properly, while you can still reach your feet
  6. Shoulder pads
  7. Elbow pads
  8. Neck guard
  9. Jersey (tucked over the pads — remember most pads must be under the uniform by rule)
  10. Helmet, chin strap fastened
  11. Mouthguard
  12. Gloves, last, so your hands are free for everything above

Then check three things before you step on: chin strap fastened, shin guards under the pants and not sticking out, and gloves meeting your elbow pads. Those are the three that referees and injuries both notice.


Common Mistakes

  • Buying skates a size too big. The most damaging equipment error in hockey. It costs you edge control, blames itself on "weak ankles," and destroys the boot from the inside. Buy 1 to 1½ sizes below your shoe size and check heel lock.
  • Buying skates that fit but never getting them baked or broken in properly, then deciding the fit is wrong.
  • Standing up, or flexing your foot, during a skate bake. You have just moulded the boot to the wrong shape.
  • Skating on whatever hollow the shop last gave you. If you don't know your hollow, you can't tell whether your edges or your technique are the problem. Pick one, write it down, ask for it every time.
  • Chasing a deeper hollow because "sharper is better." Deeper means more bite and less glide. Heavier players usually want the opposite.
  • Buying the flex the calculation says, then cutting four inches off the stick. Cutting stiffens it. Buy lower if you plan to cut more than about three inches.
  • Assuming a stiffer stick shoots harder. If you can't load it, it shoots softer.
  • Buying a deep, wide-open curve as a beginner. It flatters your forehand and quietly wrecks your backhand and your passing accuracy — and the backhand is the shot goalies read worst.
  • Never looking at the bottom of your blade. Uneven wear at the toe or heel is a free diagnosis that your lie is wrong.
  • Wearing pads that are too big "for extra protection." They slide out of the way on impact and open the gaps you were trying to close.
  • Leaving a gap between shin guards and pants. Check it in a skating stance, not standing up.
  • Loose elbow pads. They rotate when you fall and put the hard cap somewhere useless.
  • Any second-hand helmet — bought, borrowed, or handed down from an older sibling. You cannot see a crushed liner or a hairline shell crack, and you cannot know its impact history. An in-date sticker does not make a hand-me-down safe — the sticker carries an expiration date (6.5 years after manufacture), which tells you nothing about the helmet's impact history or the state of its liner. It is a certification clock, not a condition report. An expired sticker is a separate problem that also makes it illegal in most youth and travel leagues.
  • Assuming your cage is the same size as your helmet. It often isn't, even in a combo pack.
  • Leaving gear in the bag between sessions. This is the single habit behind rot, rust, smell and skin problems.
  • Storing skates in soakers while still wet. The soaker's job is to absorb moisture, not to seal it in.
  • Spending big on a stick and cheap on a helmet. Consider what each one is protecting.
  • Forgetting a mouthguard or neck guard in a league that requires them, and being sent off the ice for it.

  7. Too-big pads protect less, not more. The three gaps that hurt people are shin-guard-to-pants, a rotating elbow pad, and the exposed wrist between glove cuff and elbow pad.
  8. Never put a child in a second-hand helmet — bought, borrowed or handed down — and never wear one past its certification expiry. Foams work by crushing, and crushed foam doesn't recover. A sibling hand-me-down with an in-date sticker has exactly the same problem as a bought used one: you cannot see a compressed liner or a hairline crack, and you cannot know the impact history. Replace any helmet that has taken a serious impact.
  9. Equipment rules differ far more between leagues than playing rules do — neck guards, full facial protection, mouthguards, HECC certification and whether pants go over or under the jersey all change by rule set. Check yours before you buy.
  10. Empty the bag every single time you get home. Hang it, run a fan, wipe your steel dry. This one habit prevents rot, rust, smell and most skin problems, and it costs you ninety seconds.

Limitations worth knowing:

  • HECC's founding date is disputed between two primary sources. HECC's own homepage states it in two places: "We are a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, created in 1978 at the request of USA Hockey." USA Hockey's own article "What the Heck is HECC?" (10 October 2017) says the council was "organized in 1976" and does not mention having requested it. Both parties are primary sources and they disagree by two years; the text uses HECC's own account and flags the conflict inline. A caution for anyone re-checking this via the Internet Archive: hecc.org hosted an unrelated organisation before roughly 2018, so earlier captures of that domain are not the hockey body.
  • HECC does not certify visors to a CSA standard, whatever you may see claimed elsewhere. HECC's own Certified Equipment list files every visor as "Eye and Face Protectors Type C" against ASTM F513 (F513-22 for current products, F513-12 for older ones) — the same standard as a full cage, with the type letter rather than the standard carrying the distinction. The string "Z262" appears nowhere on hecc.org: not on the Certified Equipment list, the About Product Certification Testing page, the labels notice, the FAQ or the homepage. CSA Z262.2 is a real and correctly cited standard elsewhere in this document — it is the Canadian face-protector standard, mandatory for Hockey Canada play — but it is not what HECC certifies to.
  • The 6.5-year HECC certification period comes from HECC's own site. Two caveats: HECC states it in a helmet-label context, with no wording extending it to face shields or masks; and USA Hockey publishes no statement of the 6.5-year figure at all — its rulebook defers to the printed sticker date.
  • Annex ZA of EN ISO 10256-2:2024 was not read directly — the standard is paywalled. The presumption of conformity asserted in the text rests on the Official Journal citation itself (Commission Implementing Decision (EU) 2026/1279), which is what confers it; a harmonised EN cited in the OJ necessarily carries an Annex ZA, but the annex text was not inspected.
  • CSA Z262.1 reaffirmation year, and the third-party confusion around it. CSA Group's own store lists the current designation as Z262.1:15 (R2025) ("Publication Year 2015", "Reaffirmed in 2025"), and that is what is used here. The (R2019) citations you will see elsewhere were correct until the 2025 reaffirmation — Internet Archive captures of the same CSA product page from 2021 and 2022 show the designation as Z262.1-15 (R2019). There is no R2024 edition in the live store or in any archived capture of it; third-party sources citing one are simply wrong. CSA Z262.2 (face protectors) follows the same pattern: Z262.2:15 (R2025), reaffirmed 2025.
  • CAN/BNQ 9415-370 currency, and the successor standard. BNQ's own pages state that the current text of 9415-370 "is a reaffirmation (reapproval) of the edition dated September 5, 2013", and that the live certification programme still runs against it under protocol BNQ 9415-970. The SCC notice of intent (posted 7 May 2024) confirms that the standard is being withdrawn — activity "Withdrawal", project need "It was decided to withdraw this document" — and that notice alone does not name a successor. The successor is nevertheless fully documented by BNQ: CAN/BNQ 0102-565/2023 (ISO 10256-5: 2017, MOD) is a published National Standard of Canada, first edition 7 February 2023, and its preface and Canadian-deviation notes repeatedly describe CAN/BNQ 9415-370 as the standard "which was in effect prior to" it. One limitation: BNQ's English standardization page for 0102-565 now returns a 404, so it is cited here from the Internet Archive capture of 13 October 2024, and the standard document itself is BNQ's own PDF retrieved via the same archive.
  • EN ISO 10256-2:2018 supersession. The 2024 edition is the current harmonised helmet standard, which the Official Journal list confirms (EN ISO 10256-1 through -4, all :2024, cited by Commission Implementing Decision (EU) 2026/1279, applicable 16 June 2026). The supersession of the 2018 edition is recorded by PKN, the Polish CEN member, whose entry for PN-EN ISO 10256-2:2018-08 reads "Wycofana i zastąpiona przez PN-EN ISO 10256-2:2025-06" — withdrawn and replaced — with withdrawal dated 11 June 2025; that 2018 adoption "implements EN ISO 10256-2:2018 [IDT], ISO 10256-2:2016 [IDT]", and the replacing document implements EN ISO 10256-2:2024. ISO's own catalogue lists ISO 10256-2:2016 as Withdrawn with "New version available: ISO 10256-2:2024". Two traps to watch for: the EN and ISO edition years differ (EN:2018 adopts ISO:2016, and there is no ISO edition dated 2018), and BSI's page for the 2024 edition carries no supersession statement. And the absence of any 2018 edition from the harmonised list proves nothing either way — the 10256 series was only harmonised under the PPE Regulation on 16 June 2026, so no earlier edition would appear there.
  • Hockey Canada Rule 3.6 sub-clause lettering has moved between editions (Hockey Canada's own 2022 bulletin cites the throat-protector clause as 3.6(f); the 2023-24 through 2026-28 rulebooks have it at 3.6(c)). The rule number 3.6 is stable; cite the letter with care. Note also that the rule text itself names no standard number — "BNQ-certified" is all it says; the mapping to CAN/BNQ 9415-370 comes from BNQ and HECC, not from the rulebook.
  • Pure Hockey's own pages contradict each other in two places, both flagged inline: on child skate fit (a ¼-inch heel allowance on the sizing guide versus a "one finger" youth check on the fitting page — this document uses the quarter inch, which is the one consistent with the heel-lock requirement), and on the range of blade lie numbers (4–8 on the stick guide, 4.0–6.0 in half increments on the stick-fitting page).
  • Replacing a helmet after a serious impact is primary-sourced. Bauer's own helmet manual: "If helmet is severely impacted, it should be replaced immediately." Hockey Canada's helmet-certification bulletin says "Helmets that are cracked, have loose fittings or missing liner pieces, or that have been subjected to a severe impact should be replaced." CSA Group's helmet FAQ adds that CSA certification carries no mandated expiry and directs users to the manufacturer's manual. One related figure remains unsourced: no numeric HECC certification duration appears on HECC's own certification-testing page, so do not assert a specific number of years from HECC directly.
  • Skin infection and dirty gear. The hockey-specific peer-reviewed source is Tlougan et al., "Skin conditions in figure skaters, ice-hockey players and speed skaters: part II", Sports Medicine 2011, which names the infectious dermatoses common in these athletes and the hygiene measures that prevent them. What does not exist is a quantified infection rate attributable to unwashed equipment — no such figure is published, and none is asserted in the text. The general mechanism — staph and MRSA living on skin, spreading by touch and by touching contaminated objects, and needing a break in the skin to cause infection — is from the NHS.   • Prices are US retailer figures retrieved on the dates above and are illustrative only. The helmet price tiers in particular come from a Discount Hockey article that references older product generations, so those figures should be treated as relative, not current. Prices vary substantially by region, currency and date.
  • One retailer page states the NHL blade curve limit is ½ inch; the NHL rulebook says ¾ inch (Rule 10.1), and that is what is used here.
  • Discount Hockey and Pure Hockey directly contradict each other on hollow and ice temperature, and the conflict is resolved inline rather than left open: Discount Hockey advises a sharper hollow for "frigid rinks" and a duller one for "warmer rinks"; Pure Hockey says colder, harder ice already "provides more bite." Bauer's own sharpening guide and the peer-reviewed ice-mechanics literature both side against Pure Hockey on the bite question — colder ice is harder, and harder ice reduces blade penetration. What remains genuinely unsourced is the prescription: no study varies hollow radius and ice temperature together, so "sharpen a step sharper for a cold rink" is still an inference from the mechanism, not a measured result. The document's practical advice — leave your hollow alone — does not depend on resolving it.
  • Skate price points and wood-stick flex. The price-point count is taken from Bauer's and CCM's own catalogues on 27 July 2026 (Bauer nine current-generation senior models across Vapor and Supreme; CCM ten across Jetspeed and Tacks; four to six tiers per line). Counts drift as generations roll over, so re-check rather than quote. The "90–100 flex" figure traces to HockeyWorld's spec sheet for the Sher-Wood 5030SC Feather-Light Senior ("Flex:90-100"), but that is a single discontinued model listed as "Currently Unavailable" — it is not a general property of wood sticks, and the CCM Ultimate ABS senior is 85 flex. The underlying "lack of choice" point is independently confirmed: the CCM Ultimate senior sells in one stiffness with only hand as an option, and Sherwood's own 5030 senior page offers no flex option at all.
  • Two product-line names that are easy to get wrong: Bauer Shadow is a model within the Supreme line, not a line of its own, and Ribcor is no longer a CCM skate line (it survives as a stick line) — CCM's skate navigation lists only JetSpeed, Tacks and NEXT.
  • The 1 to 1½ sizes smaller skate-versus-shoe rule is better sourced than most such rules of thumb. The Pure Hockey sizing guide carries eight brand-specific charts, four Bauer and four CCM, and the rule is manufacturer-verified for CCM, whose own Skate Selector publishes a "CCM HOCKEY SKATE SIZE / SHOE SIZE (MEN)" table with a 1.0-size offset through youth and junior and 1.5 through senior (skate 7 → shoe 8.5, skate 13 → shoe 14.5). Bauer deliberately declines to give a number, stating that finding a skate "isn't as simple as taking your shoe size and looking at a conversion chart" and publishing no conversion table. True publishes no official sizing offset at all, and Pure Hockey has no True chart. So: solid for CCM, explicitly declined by Bauer, unknown for True. Get measured.
  • Claims about black tape hiding the puck from the goalie are widely repeated in the sport and are reported by retailer guides, but no published study supports the effect. PubMed returns nothing on blade tape colour and puck visibility; the goaltender visual-search literature (Vickers' quiet-eye work, including Panchuk, Vickers and Hopkins 2017 on deflected shots) concerns gaze location and fixation timing, not chromatic contrast, and contains no mention of tape, contrast, colour or luminance; Salmela and Fiorito's 1979 "Visual cues in ice hockey goaltending" is a temporal-occlusion study of cue availability. The puck-tracking papers that surface in search are computer-vision work on broadcast footage, not human perception. Treat the absence as real. The only authoritative statement on the question runs the other way and is itself belief-based: NHL.com's David Marcoux on white tape, quoted in the text.
