Key focus

Seven ideas survive changing your position, your team and your league. Each has its own section below, with an example and its evidence.

Most of what a coach tells you is your team's system rather than a law of hockey. When your bench and this page disagree, your bench wins.

You almost never have the puck — about forty seconds in every twenty minutes of ice time, measured on professional forwards at five-on-five — so the rest of the shift is most of your game.

Look before the puck reaches you. A glance while the pass is travelling is free; one taken after it arrives is paid for in possession.

Where you are standing decides what a mistake costs, so take the stride that changes the ice before you choose the play.

Give the player with the puck two places to put it, at different angles, because two teammates in one line from the puck are a single option.

Overview

Hockey has a small number of ideas that stay true after the systems, the positions and the rule books change. This page collects them, says what evidence each one rests on, and points at the document that covers each one in full.

The reason to learn them as principles rather than as instructions is that instructions expire. The instruction you were given for a defensive-zone corner belongs to the system your team happened to play that season; the reasoning underneath it transfers to a new position, a new coach and a new league. A player who knows only the instruction is stuck the first time the situation is one nobody described to them.

Two of the seven are not tactics at all. One is a rule about rules — which book you are under, and where you sit inside it, decides what is legal for you — and one is a safety constraint that holds in every league whether or not yours allows body checking. Those two come first because being penalised, ejected or hurt costs more than being out of position.

The rest are judgement, and each says plainly how much measurement is behind it. Some rest on published research. Some are coaching reasoning with no measurement behind them, and where that is the case the section says so rather than dressing it up.


1. Most of what you are told is your team's system, not a law of hockey

The principle. Almost every "always do X" in hockey is really "in the system my team plays, do X". Who takes the first forechecker's job, who covers the front of the net, whether your defence partner follows you to a puck, how high a winger holds in your own end: all of these are decisions a coach makes, and a different coach makes them differently and is also right. ⚠️ That last one needs saying in full, because "stay high" means two different things about twenty feet apart. In your own end, while the other team has the puck, it means level with the opposing defenceman on your side — and it expires the moment your team wins the puck, when you come down the wall to the outlet instead.

Why it matters. A beginner who treats a coaching choice as a law of the sport gets two things wrong at once. They do the wrong job when they change teams, and they stop asking, because a law does not need asking about. The same instruction can be correct on one bench and a serious mistake on the next.

What to notice. You are probably looking at a system rather than a law whenever the instruction is about where a teammate goes rather than about what the referee will do. Rules are enforced by an official and written in a book you can read. Systems are enforced by your coach and written on a whiteboard.

What to do. Find out which system your team plays, and ask rather than infer it. Defensive Zone Coverage calls coverage the single most system-dependent part of hockey and gives the fastest question to ask a new coach.

Worked example. One question opens up the two main families of defensive-zone coverage: when the puck is in our corner, what does the weak-side winger do? ⚠️ "Stays up" against "comes down" is not the answer on its own, because in a low zone collapse — which is a zone system — the weak-side winger does come down. The tell is what they come down to. Dropping into the high slot while the centre is low, and climbing straight back, is a collapse: the winger's job is a piece of ice. Leaving the blue line because a body left it, and following that body as far as it goes — into the corner if that is where it goes — is man or hybrid: the winger's job is a player. The words you will be shouted at with are identical; the jobs are different. Defensive Zone Coverage has the rest of the tells, including the one a headcount cannot give you — count the wingers, not the heads.

The evidence, and its limits. This is a convention rather than a rule, and these pages are not exempt from it. Where they have to assume a system they assume a 2-1-2 forecheck and a low zone collapse in the defensive zone, and they say so — Forechecking Systems is explicit that the choice is "a documentation convention, not a claim about what most teams play", and Breakouts sets out why a claim that one forecheck is "the most common" should be read as an impression: no published count of what teams actually run was found for it.

A realistic alternative. For the forecheck, a 1-2-2 is the normal alternative, and Forechecking Systems recommends it as the default for adult recreational hockey, where a 2-1-2 is hard to sustain for a whole game — ⚠️ labelling that as a recommendation for your league rather than as a claim about what most teams play. For defensive-zone coverage, the alternative to a zone collapse is man-marking or a hybrid of the two.

The principle. Hockey has several rule books, they disagree with each other, and your age group, your league and your country decide which one is yours. The same action can be normal play in one book and a penalty in another.

Why it matters. This is the difference between a mistake that costs you a shift and one that gets you ejected or hurts somebody. It is also the one principle you cannot reason your way to on the ice — you have to be told.

Worked example: whether anybody may body check you.

Under USA Hockey, Rule 604(a) prohibits body checking "in the 12 & under youth age classifications and below, all Girls'/Women's age classifications and all non-check Adult classifications" — and the same rule adds that "[a] local governing body may prohibit body checking in any classification", so your own association can take checking away from an age group the printed list leaves in.

Under Hockey Canada, the body-checking rule runs the other way round on the page: Rule 7.3 "applies only in divisions of U13 and below, in female hockey, and any other divisions approved by a Member of Hockey Canada", which means that in those divisions a deliberate body check is itself the penalty.

In Britain, neither the IIHF rule book nor the domestic In-House Rules states a checking age at all. The answer is in the competition regulations, and Ice Hockey UK publishes a separate one for each league it runs, so the document you need depends on which league you are in. Its Junior Rules of Competition for 2026-27 — junior being unisex, by birth year — set U10 and U12 as non-checking and U14, U16 and U19 as checking, and the separate U10 document states it as a rule rather than as a format: "Bodychecking is NOT allowed in U10 matches." ⚠️ Do not read an adult answer off that junior table. The NIHL's Divisions 1 and 2 are "Full ice, checking, stop clock" — but the Women's NIHL is a separate competition with regulations of its own, and it is non-checking at both of its levels, senior and U16 alike, each printed as "Full ice, non-checking, stop clock". ⚠️ Those four documents cover the leagues Ice Hockey UK runs itself and no others. Nothing here answers the EIHL, BUIHA university hockey, NIHL National, or Scottish domestic competitions outside the junior structure — for any of those, ask your league before you hit anybody.

The evidence, and its limits. Every quotation above is the governing document's own wording, and each one is named — a rule number where it is a rule, and the document where it is a Standard of Play or a competition regulation rather than a rule — so you can go and check it. How many leagues sit in each category is not something a rulebook records, so this page can tell you that categories exist and not which one you are in. That question has a person attached to it, not a document.

A realistic alternative. None. This is the one place where "it depends what your coach says" is the wrong answer: a coach cannot make a body check legal in a non-checking category.

3. You almost never have the puck

The principle. Your time with the puck is a rounding error in your shift, and it arrives in bursts of about a second. What you do in the rest of the time decides what those bursts are worth.

Why it matters. Most players practise the part of hockey they spend the least time doing. The three to four percent of your shift with the puck is the part that feels like hockey, and the other ninety-six percent is where games are decided.

What to notice. Watch your own shift back and count how many seconds you were actually touching the puck. The number will be smaller than your memory of it, because the seconds with the puck are the ones you remember.

What to do. Treat off-puck play as four separate jobs rather than one — your team has the puck, they have the puck, the puck is loose, or possession has just changed — because what is right in one of those states is close to the opposite of what is right in another. Most players have a plan for one of the four.

Worked example. A winger who "had a quiet game" usually means they touched the puck rarely. But the two most valuable things they did that night — arriving at the right moment so the defenceman had somewhere to put a breakout pass, and getting back above the puck so a turnover did not become a rush — both happened without the puck, and neither shows up in anybody's memory of the game.

The evidence, and its limits. This one is measured. Researchers at Waterloo used the NHL's own puck-and-player tracking across 1,194 games of the 2023-24 season, covering 671 skaters, and found that at five-on-five a forward holds the puck for about forty seconds in every twenty minutes of ice time and a defenceman about forty-nine seconds, in individual possessions averaging roughly 1.3 seconds each — between about 3.3% and 4.2% of ice time. ⚠️ Carry the scope with the number, because it is doing a lot of work: that is NHL tracking data the league itself calls unofficial, and the paper records that it "may differ from other datasets that track possession information". It is NHL professionals, at five-on-five only, and it measures possession rather than involvement.

A realistic alternative. None — this is an observation rather than a coaching choice. What is a coaching choice is what your team asks you to do with the time, and that belongs to principle 1.

4. Look before the puck reaches you

The principle. A glance over your shoulder while the pass is still travelling is free, because your eyes have nothing else to do. A glance after the puck arrives is paid for in possession time, and the picture has changed while you looked.

Why it matters. Players who look like they see the whole ice have almost always simply already looked. It is the cheapest improvement available in hockey: it costs no fitness, no ice time and no talent.

What to notice. Two players receiving the same pass look completely different from the bench, and the difference is not their hands. One watched the puck the whole way and discovered the forechecker on arrival. The other knew about the forechecker before the pass was even made.

What to do. Take a look while the puck is being retrieved, another as the passer's head comes up, and a last one just before it reaches you. Then receive the puck already turning the way you decided to go.

Worked example. You are on the half-wall in your own end and your defenceman is behind the net with the puck. If your first look at the ice happens when the puck touches your stick, the decision you then start takes about as long as a forechecker needs to reach you. If you looked twice while the puck was travelling, the decision is already made and the reception and the pass are one movement.

The evidence, and its limits. This one is measured too, in hockey rather than borrowed from another sport. Berg and colleagues, in the Journal of Sports Sciences in 2025, hand-coded 2,545 puck receptions by 88 professional players in the Swedish men's and women's top leagues, and found the action after the reception succeeded 78.8% of the time when the player had scanned first against 70.1% when they had not — a difference of 8.7 percentage points. ⚠️ Two limits travel with that. "Success" is a criterion set the authors drew up with the Swedish Ice Hockey Association rather than a count of goals, and because they recorded scanning as yes-or-no, the authors report that their data cannot say whether scanning more often is better than scanning once. Going from no look to one look is the finding; going from two looks to four is not.

A realistic alternative. None. Coaching material that tells you to scan on a fixed clock — every one or two seconds — is going further than the measurement supports, and the professionals in that study averaged a good deal less than that.

5. Where you are standing decides what a mistake costs

The principle. The same play is not worth the same everywhere. A cross-ice pass is brilliant in the corner of their end and catastrophic in front of your own net, and nothing about the pass changed — only the ice under it.

Why it matters. Most bad hockey decisions are good decisions made in the wrong place. Thinking about location first turns a long list of things you are not allowed to do into one question you can answer under pressure.

What to notice. The question is: if I lose the puck here, how many seconds and how many bodies stand between the turnover and a shot on my net? In front of your own net the answer is none and none. Deep in their corner it is four or five seconds and the whole team.

What to do. Change where you are standing before you decide what to do. One stride out of the most expensive ice improves every option on your list, and it is almost always available.

Worked example. You are behind your own net with the puck and a forechecker arriving. The cross-ice pass to the far winger is on. It is also the one option on your list whose failure is a goal rather than a lost possession, because if it is read you have handed them the puck in the one place where the turnover and the shot are the same event. The rim up the wall is worth less if it works and costs almost nothing if it does not, and that is what makes it the better bet from there and the worse bet from the other end of the ice.

The evidence, and its limits. ⚠️ The ranking of areas by what a turnover costs is coaching reasoning rather than a measured result, and Risk Management says so in terms. It is reasoned from where dangerous shots come from and from how long a recovery takes. One area of the five — the offensive blue line — does have a tracked turnover price attached to it from a single Swiss-league dataset at five-on-five, and Risk Management sets out what was searched for the other four and which candidate could not be read. Take the order of the areas rather than the labels on them.

A realistic alternative. Not an alternative so much as the other half: what you should do with the ranking is play simple in your own end and inventive in theirs, because a missed chance in their end costs you a chance and a turnover in your own end costs you a goal. ⚠️ And the ranking is not fixed while the game runs: Risk Management sets out in a table how the scoreboard, the clock and being a man up or a man down move it — leading by one in the third you reach for the safe options earlier than usual, and trailing late the arithmetic inverts.

6. Give the player with the puck two places to put it

The principle. A player with the puck and two options beats a player with the puck and none, whatever the difference in skill between them. Being one of those two options, on purpose, is most of what a teammate is for.

Why it matters. Almost every bad pass is a passing problem only in the sense that there was nothing to pass to. Fixing your own position is faster than fixing somebody else's hands.

What to notice. Two options only count as two if they are at different angles from the puck. Two teammates standing in the same line from the carrier are one option, because one defender's stick takes both away.

What to do. Move so that you, the carrier and the third player make a triangle rather than a line, and make sure the passing lane between you is genuinely empty rather than merely short. The test is time rather than distance: would the pass beat the opponent who is closing on your teammate?

Worked example. Your defenceman has the puck on the half-wall under pressure and you skate straight toward them to help. You have now given the forechecker one stick position that covers both of you, and you have taken away the ice your teammate was going to use. Moving away from a teammate pinned in a battle is usually the help — they need somewhere to put the puck, not another body in the pile.

The evidence, and its limits. ⚠️ This is reasoning rather than a measured result, and Puck Support and Spacing labels it as such. No governing body has been found to issue a support distance as a standard — ⚠️ and one manual's silence is not a survey of every governing body, so read that as "none found" rather than as "none exists" — while the one published figure that comes close is a coach's rule of thumb quoted in a USA Hockey article, which is why Puck Support and Spacing gives a working range and then tells you to judge it by time instead.

A realistic alternative. Defending, the instinct reverses: stay behind the first defender rather than joining them on the same puck. And "usually" is carrying weight in both directions — a deliberate double-team behind your own net is a common coaching instruction, and if your team marks specific opponents rather than areas of ice you may have to follow yours out of the supporting position entirely. Ask which your team plays.

7. Choose how you meet the boards before you have to

The principle. Races to a loose puck along the wall end in head-on contact with the boards, and the posture you arrive in is what decides whether that is nothing or a spinal injury. Decide the posture on the way, because there is no time to decide on arrival.

Why it matters. This one is not about winning the puck. It applies in non-checking hockey exactly as it does in checking hockey, because a wall does not need an opponent to hurt you, and it applies at every speed.

Worked example. The puck is dumped into the corner and you and an opponent both go. You are half a stride behind, and the temptation is to put your head down and dig, which is exactly the head-down, head-first posture that straightens the cervical spine and is the one to resist. The alternative is to take the angle wide so that you arrive alongside the wall rather than into it, with your head up — and it costs you a fraction of a second and nothing else.

The evidence, and its limits. This rests on USA Hockey's Heads Up Hockey materials, which set out the mechanism — with the head flexed forward "this normal curve is removed, and the cervical spine becomes straight", so the head stops on impact while the body keeps moving — and which restate research by Charles Tator and colleagues in the Canadian Journal of Neurological Sciences. The walking-speed finding belongs to the head-down collision specifically, and the light-hit warning belongs to the turned back; they are two statements about two things and must not be merged into one. The postures are from a second USA Hockey manual, Introduction To Body Contact — the angle, the parallel skates, the forearm and hip, the shoulder prohibition and the spread-the-load fallback are all its teaching points or its own named common errors.

A realistic alternative. None, and this is the one principle on this page where "ask your coach" is not part of the answer. It is not a tactic, it is not a coaching preference, and no system changes it.

Common Mistakes

  • Using a principle to argue with a coach. If your bench tells you something that contradicts a page here, your bench wins on the ice and you ask about it afterwards. A principle is for the situations nobody has given you an instruction for.
  • Treating a principle as though it were a rule. Only principle 2 is about rules, and it is about finding out which rules are yours. The other six are judgement, and judgement can be overruled by a situation.
  • Assuming that what is measured in the NHL is true of your league. The two measured findings on this page — how little of a shift is spent with the puck, and what looking first is worth — were both measured on professionals. They point the right way for you; the exact numbers are theirs.
  • Reading a note that no source was found as "this is made up". Where a principle here says its evidence is coaching reasoning, that is a statement about how much measurement exists, not a reason to ignore it. The document it points at says what was searched for.
  • Skipping principle 2 because you already know how to play. Which category you are in is the one thing on this page you cannot work out from experience, and an adult moving between leagues is more exposed to it than a beginner, not less.
  • Waiting until the boards arrive to decide how to meet them. The angle and the parallel skates in principle 7 both have to be chosen on the way in, and neither is available in the last half-stride. ⚠️ What is still available is head up and chin off your chest — and, if you are already facing the wall, stick and gloves up and spread out on the glass so the impact lands across as wide a surface of you as it can. That is damage limitation rather than the posture to aim for, and it is not a reason to leave the choice that late.
